about

Sentimental Debris

After the release of his all instrumental, slightly experimental album ‘Talking Backwoods’ and in the midst of the usual high number of live dates up and down the country, Scott Wainwright decided to sit down and record a very simple and stripped back collection of guitar instrumentals, mainly for his own enjoyment, though with the idea of a possible album release.

This collection of pieces, which forms this ‘mini-album’, entitled ‘Sentimental Debris’, is a minimalist masterpiece in miniature. These eight pieces for solo six string guitar have been hanging around in Scott’s practice time for a while now and were simply waiting for an opportunity to arise for them to be captured in a studio environment.

Recorded in a single four hour session, on a rainy November day at the Otley based studio of musician and friend, Phil Snell, where many of the pieces were captured in a single take and others requiring only a few false starts before a final take arrived. The resulting document finds Scott taking his guitar into familiar and not so familiar territory.

Each of the pieces take in a range of moods and emotions, from joyful fast paced opener ‘King Benny’s Dream’ played with a bottleneck, to the more contemplative ‘Static, Back Then’ and then on to the more melancholic ‘A Day without Sorrow’. The spiritual quest also continues with the pieces ‘Revival in the Valley’ and ‘Ragtime Raga’ whilst ‘Samuel’s Turn’ is an ode from a father to his son.

Scott uses various guitar tunings and picking patterns throughout the album, to create a body of interweaving themes and colours, from the sound of a single instrument. This is as honest an album as the artist as ever made and is shout back to his earliest recordings.

‘Sentimental Debris’ is an album, short in time, but deep in content and should be played within an idle moment, before an open fire with a favourite beverage in hand, to help to bring the listener a stillness and a peace in our ever moving and troubled world.

The album is only available to Download from Bandcamp and CD Baby sites and on a limited edition CD, with artwork compiled from photos taken by Scott’s wife, Susan and Daughter Eleanor and by long time friend Darren Kelsall. The CD edition is available while stocks last from Bandcamp and at live shows.
